Neural DSP launches Archetype: John Mayer X, a landmark signature plugin bringing John Mayer’s legendary tones to players worldwide

Neural DSP has joined forces with iconic guitarist John Mayer to unveil Archetype: John Mayer X — a groundbreaking signature plugin that translates some of the most sought-after guitar tones of the modern era into a powerful, accessible digital format.

This release stands as one of the most significant gear launches in recent guitar history. On one side is John Mayer, a true 21st-century guitar icon, renowned for his unmistakable tone, refined touch, and a legendary collection of boutique and vintage gear that has shaped countless recordings and performances.

On the other side is Neural DSP, the industry’s leading innovator in amplifier and effects modeling. Through a steady stream of high-end plugins, artist collaborations, and cutting-edge hardware, Neural DSP has fundamentally reshaped how guitarists experience digital tone.

At first glance, the partnership may seem unexpected. John Mayer has long been associated with vintage analog equipment and tube amplifiers. His tone — endlessly analyzed across YouTube channels and social media — has traditionally been built around carefully curated rigs featuring Two Rock, Dumble, vintage Fender amplifiers, and a pedalboard where the Klon Centaur has always played a central role.

For Mayer to place his trust, name, and sound into a software plugin represents a defining moment for amp modeling. It also sends a powerful message to players who may have hesitated to embrace digital technology until now.

This collaboration reflects Mayer’s openness to innovation — much like his approach to refining the classic Stratocaster into the Silver Sky — and highlights the maturity of Neural DSP’s technology in convincing even the most dedicated analog purists.

The signs were already there. A Fractal unit was used on parts of Sob Rock, Mayer has performed with a Quad Cortex during a Coachella guest appearance, and he has openly praised modeling solutions from Universal Audio.

Now comes Archetype: John Mayer X — a plugin that faithfully recreates the core gear behind some of the most influential guitar recordings and live performances of the last two decades.

At its heart, the plugin is built around the amplifiers that define John Mayer’s clean tone foundation. It features three standalone amp models inspired by his 1964 Fender Vibroverb, his Dumble Steel String Singer #002, and his Two Rock Signature prototype #83.

In addition, the plugin includes a comprehensive Three-In-One amplifier that mirrors Mayer’s real-world multi-amp setup used both live and in the studio. The amps and corresponding cabinets are blended and routed exactly as they are in his personal rig.

Each amplifier is paired with period-accurate cabinets: a Fender combo with a 15-inch CTS speaker, a Dumble cabinet loaded with a vintage EVM12L, and a Celestion G12M Greenback taken from his Two Rock cabinet.

Five essential John Mayer pedals have also been meticulously modeled. These include Justa Boost, based on his always-on Keeley Katana; Halfman OD, a faithful recreation of the iconic Klon Centaur; and Millipede Delay, inspired by the Way Huge Aqua Puss.

Also included are the Antelope Filter, derived from his EHX Q-Tron and vital for tracks like I Don’t Trust Myself (Loving You), and Tealbreaker, a dual-drive effect combining flavors of the Ibanez TS-10 and Marshall Bluesbreaker.

The plugin further features Dream Delay, modeled after Mayer’s trusted Providence Chrono-Delay, along with an additional compressor and EQ. A refined user interface — reportedly requested by John Mayer himself — enhances usability and workflow.

In short, Archetype: John Mayer X is a complete tonal toolkit designed to satisfy even the most discerning fans of Mayer’s sound.

Speaking to Guitar World, Neural DSP CEO Douglas Castro revealed that initial discussions with Mayer began in 2022, with full development kicking off earlier this year.

“We had a call with John, and after about 20 minutes of explaining that we could realistically achieve anything he was looking for, he became genuinely excited,” Castro recalls. “That was essentially the starting point of the collaboration.”

The project was led by Neural DSP Plugins Product Manager François Barrillon, who described it as a unique partnership. The team even transported their entire modeling setup from Neural DSP’s headquarters in Finland directly to Mayer’s studio.

The results speak for themselves. John Mayer has already debuted his signature plugin live on air during a Life with John Mayer radio broadcast.

“There are still many players who remain skeptical of digital amp modeling,” Barrillon reflects.
“I’m not trying to convert anyone, but honestly, if it’s good enough for John Mayer to use on stage and to develop a full plugin with us, it’s good enough for just about any guitarist.”

“I’m convinced that even the most hardcore tube amp purists will be surprised by how dynamic, warm, and genuinely ‘real’ this plugin feels. I know plenty of tube amps that sound colder and more lifeless than this.”

“I’ll never forget sending John the very first prototype,” he continues.
“I was extremely nervous. Two days later, he sent me a video from the studio playing the Slow Dancing in a Burning Room solo through the plugin — and it sounded exactly like the record. That’s when I knew we had it.”

In an official press statement, Douglas Castro added:
John Mayer’s tone has inspired guitarists around the world, and it was an honor to work directly with him to recreate the rig that anchors his sound. There’s an intimacy in how his setup responds — it breathes, opens up, and conveys emotion — and capturing that behavior was one of the most meaningful projects we’ve ever undertaken.”
