Gibson Custom proudly introduces the Mick Ronson 1968 Les Paul Custom Collector’s Edition — an extraordinary ultra-limited recreation of the legendary guitarist’s most celebrated instrument. Mick Ronson, renowned as a producer, arranger, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and one of rock music’s most distinctive guitar voices, left a profound mark on modern music. His modified 1968 Les Paul Custom, famously stripped of its original Ebony finish, became inseparable from his sound and visual identity.

Only 100 pieces of the Mick Ronson 1968 Les Paul Custom Collector’s Edition have been produced worldwide. These rare instruments are available exclusively through authorized dealers, Gibson Garage locations, and the official Gibson website.

The Architect of a Generation’s Sound

Mick Ronson stands as one of rock’s most individual and quietly influential guitarists. Far beyond his celebrated partnership with David Bowie during Bowie’s most transformative years, Ronson proved himself as a producer, composer, arranger, and multi-instrumentalist. His dramatic yet melodic and powerfully aggressive playing style helped define the sound of an era.

As an arranger, he shaped recordings for artists including David Bowie, Lou Reed, Pure Prairie League, Ellen Foley, and Roger McGuinn. He also contributed to the arrangement of John Mellencamp’s “Jack & Diane.”

One of his most remarkable achievements was his work on “Perfect Day” from Lou Reed’s 1972 album Transformer. Acting as co-producer, pianist, and string arranger, Mick Ronson crafted the lush glam atmosphere that gave the track its emotional depth. His refined piano performance on “Perfect Day” remains one of the most elegant and emotionally resonant productions of his career.

His collaborations extended to Ian Hunter, studio work with Bob Dylan, Roger Daltrey, and Van Morrison, as well as production efforts for artists such as Morrissey and Roger McGuinn, demonstrating exceptional musical versatility.

Ronson released five solo studio albums, including Slaughter on 10th Avenue, which reached the United Kingdom Top Ten charts. However, his enduring legacy was solidified through his collaboration with David Bowie on landmark albums such as The Man Who Sold the World, Hunky Dory, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, and Aladdin Sane.

The Guitar Behind the Legend

At the core of Ronson’s signature tone was his beloved 1968 Les Paul Custom. By removing its original Ebony finish, he gave the instrument a raw aesthetic that became synonymous with his identity. His bold tone was shaped through the use of a parked wah pedal, fuzz, and echo effects.

Today, Gibson Custom pays tribute to that legacy with a painstakingly accurate recreation. The Mick Ronson 1968 Les Paul Custom Collector’s Edition is handcrafted with extraordinary attention to detail. Using advanced Murphy Lab aging techniques, every nuance of wear, feel, and tonal character from the original guitar has been authentically reproduced.

According to Lee Bartram, Head of Commercial and Marketing EMEA at Gibson:

Mick Ronson is a true musical icon whose impact, though delivered in far too short a lifetime, remains immeasurable. As a writer, producer, vocalist, and one of the most influential guitarists of his generation, he helped shape the sound of the 1970s through his collaborations with David Bowie, Lou Reed, Mott the Hoople, Elton John, and many others. His legacy continues to inspire musicians and fans alike. For Gibson, it is both an honor and a privilege to celebrate the legacy he left behind.”
