He learned the craft from his mother and chose to follow this family path instead of pursuing university studies, building his expertise on a foundation of heritage and hands-on experience.

Interestingly, he prefers the term “guitarrero” — the traditional Spanish word for guitar maker — rather than “luthier.”

“When you come from a long family tradition, the guitar feels like something alive, almost like a creature,” he explains.

When did you feel you had learned enough?
According to Vicente Carrillo, that moment never truly comes. A luthier is always learning, adapting, and searching for new possibilities. While guitars are still made using century-old principles, today’s variations and expectations are far more diverse.

What enables innovation?
Wood plays a central role. Its unique patterns—especially in exotic species—allow for creative expression in the guitar’s appearance. This makes it possible to innovate while still preserving the essence of the Spanish classical guitar tradition.

What defines a great guitar?
It is a combination of materials, technique, and sound. However, the relationship with the client is equally important. Meeting their expectations requires time and dedication.

What does it take to become a guitarrero?
Patience comes first, followed by humility in everyday work with your team. A deep understanding of wood and learning from skilled workshops are also essential.

Workshop tour experience
Continuing a tradition that dates back to 1744, Vicente Carrillo welcomes visitors to his workshop in Casasimarro.

The town itself is known for its rich musical culture, with around 200 guitar players.

The guided tour begins in the wood storage area and takes visitors through the entire guitar-making process. It can also be tailored to individual interests, offering a unique and immersive experience.
