DEEP PURPLE Guitarist Simon McBride Insists the Band Has No Plans to Slow Down

Nearly six decades after the formation of DEEP PURPLE, the legendary rock band continues to prove that true passion for music knows no retirement. Even after countless tours, classic albums, and decades on the road, the group has no intention of easing its schedule. Instead, they are already planning another studio album alongside an extensive run of live performances. In a recent interview, guitarist Simon McBride shared his thoughts on what keeps the band motivated and why the journey is far from over.

According to Simon McBride, DEEP PURPLE occasionally takes short breaks, but even those periods are rarely spent away from music.

“Every now and then we take a bit of a break. Last year we stepped back from heavy touring. We played a handful of shows—not nearly as many as usual—but we spent that time recording a new album. In many ways, last year felt like a short pause. This year, though, everything is happening at full speed. We've got somewhere around 90 to 95 concerts lined up. I can't remember the exact number. We're also talking about making another album and heading back out on the road after that.”

For McBride, having a purpose is essential, regardless of age or experience.

“I honestly believe everyone needs something to aim for. Having a goal keeps you moving forward. For the other members of the band, who are older than I am, continuing to play music is incredibly important because they still have the ability to do it. It would be different if they couldn't play or sing anymore. But they still perform at an amazingly high level.”

The guitarist also praised vocalist Ian Gillan, highlighting the way he has adapted his voice over the years while maintaining his unmistakable identity.

“Ian has adjusted his singing as the years have gone by. You can't expect someone who's 80 years old to sing exactly the way they did at 20. It's like asking an 80-year-old Olympic athlete to perform exactly as they did in their youth—it simply isn't possible. Yet he does an incredible job. He's a genius. He truly is a remarkable genius.”

As for retirement, DEEP PURPLE has no intention of bringing its remarkable journey to an end.

“We're definitely not planning to stop, and I think that's a wonderful thing.”

For Simon McBride, music is much more than a career—it has become a lifelong necessity.

“Music is almost like an addiction. Once it becomes part of your life, it's impossible to let it go. I honestly can't imagine a day when I would stop playing. The idea simply doesn't make sense to me.”
