The Bass That Changed Music Forever: Fender Celebrates 75 Years of the Precision Bass with Three Stunning Anniversary Models

Fender has officially unveiled a special limited-edition collection of bass guitars celebrating the 75th anniversary of the legendary Precision Bass — the instrument that reshaped modern music and became the blueprint for electric bass tone across generations.

The new 75th Anniversary Precision Bass Collection introduces three very different interpretations of the iconic model, each designed to honor a different chapter of the P Bass legacy.

Leading the lineup is the premium American Professional PJ Bass, a sophisticated modern hybrid that combines the punch of a traditional Precision Bass with the versatility of a Jazz Bass setup. It features a PJ pickup configuration, pairing a Jazz Bass bridge single-coil with the classic Precision Bass split-coil in the middle position. Additional highlights include a HiMass bridge, gold hardware, a gorgeous 2-Color Sunburst finish, and an eye-catching figured maple top over an alder body.

This bass isn’t just about tone — visually, it’s absolutely stunning. Fender also included a sculpted neck heel, giving players easier access to the upper frets for more adventurous playing styles beyond the traditional range.

Next comes the pure vintage tribute: the American Vintage II 1951 Precision Bass. Finished in classic Butterscotch Blonde, this model faithfully recreates the earliest days of the Precision Bass era. With its single-ply pickguard, chrome control plate, ash body, and unmistakable headstock shape, the instrument proudly displays its close relationship to the early Telecaster guitars.

That connection makes perfect sense — after all, the world’s first mass-produced electric guitar and the first mass-produced electric bass were born during the same era. This vintage-inspired model keeps things authentic with a single classic single-coil pickup that delivers the unmistakable sound of early Precision Basses.

Completing the anniversary collection is the glamorous Player II Precision Bass in the dazzling Diamond Dust Sparkle finish. This version embraces bold stage-ready aesthetics while maintaining the timeless Precision Bass formula. It features the iconic split-coil pickup and a pearloid pickguard that perfectly complements the sparkling finish.

Modern playability upgrades include rolled fingerboard edges, a comfortable Modern C neck profile, a 9.5-inch fingerboard radius, and a contemporary four-saddle bridge equipped with Single-Groove Steel Barrel Saddles.

These anniversary instruments will only be available for a limited time — just one year. And few instruments deserve such a celebration more than the Precision Bass. Its impact on music history is impossible to overstate. The P Bass didn’t simply influence popular music — it helped define it, ushering in a completely new era as bass players transitioned from upright basses to electric instruments.

As legendary bassist Bob Glaub put it:

“It’s the bass you think of when you go to pick a bass. It’s magic and it really has no limits.”

Bassist Washington shared his personal connection to the instrument:

“It completely changed the way I played after coming from upright bass. The sound, the feel — it inspires me every time I pick it up. I’ve played on countless records, and there are bass lines I simply wouldn’t have approached the same way on another instrument. This bass allows me to go wherever I want musically.”

To mark the anniversary, Fender has also launched a dedicated video series featuring some of the most respected Precision Bass players in the industry, including Nate Mendel, Tal Wilkinson, Geezer Butler, and many more.

Reflecting on the instrument’s legacy, Geezer Butler said:

“I tried other basses, but nothing had the balance of a P Bass. Eventually, it becomes part of you.”
