The story of the PRS SE Series began in 2001 with the introduction of the SE Santana. During the past twenty-five years, the lineup has expanded dramatically and now includes more than twenty different models. Throughout its evolution, PRS Guitars has remained committed to one fundamental goal: giving players an affordable instrument without sacrificing the quality, performance, or craftsmanship associated with the PRS name.

This article explores how the PRS SE family has transformed over the years, from the earliest design details to the latest hardware refinements. Changes such as adding Paul Reed Smith's signature to the headstock, introducing updated pickup rings, and improving tuning machines all reflect the steady evolution of the series.

Although the guitar is instantly recognizable today as an early PRS SE model, several features distinguish it from modern versions.
One of the most noticeable differences was the headstock. Instead of displaying the Paul Reed Smith signature that has since become a defining characteristic of the brand, the headstock simply featured the "Santana SE" logo.
The fingerboard also looked quite different. Rather than the famous bird inlays—or even traditional dot markers—it featured distinctive slash-shaped position markers that gave the instrument its own visual identity.
The body construction differed as well. Built entirely from mahogany, the guitar featured a flat top instead of the carved profile that has become closely associated with modern PRS instruments.

As the years passed, the company steadily incorporated more signature PRS design elements into the SE lineup. Alongside improvements in manufacturing techniques, the guitars received upgraded specifications, refined hardware, and increasingly sophisticated construction methods.
Over the past twenty-five years, the series has seen numerous significant milestones. Among them are the introduction of Wing Button tuning machines and, in 2003, the release of the first PRS SE model featuring a maple veneer top.

These developments illustrate how the PRS SE Series has continuously evolved while staying true to its original mission: delivering dependable, high-quality, and affordable instruments that capture more and more of the unmistakable character and craftsmanship of PRS Guitars.
