The Story Behind the PRS McCarty: A Guitar Inspired by Legends

Introduced in 1994, the PRS McCarty quickly became one of the most respected and recognizable models in the PRS Guitars lineup. More than simply adding another instrument to the company's catalog, its release represented a tribute to one of the most influential figures in the history of electric guitar design while also reflecting PRS Guitars' commitment to vintage-inspired tone and craftsmanship.

Paul Reed Smith shared the story of how the model came to life.

According to him, acclaimed guitarist David Grissom approached the company with a very specific request. He wanted an instrument capable of capturing the rich, expressive tone heard on Duane Allman's legendary live recording, Live at the Fillmore.

That request became the starting point for an entirely new project. The team at PRS Guitars set out to develop a guitar that combined vintage character, exceptional responsiveness, and a dynamic voice capable of delivering the warm, singing sustain associated with classic rock recordings.

Once development of the instrument was complete, Paul Reed Smith decided that the model should carry the name McCarty. Before making the decision official, however, he discussed it with David Grissom.

Although the original concept for the guitar had been inspired by Grissom's own vision, he immediately supported the idea of naming the instrument after someone else. Looking back, Paul Reed Smith recalled that David Grissom believed it was the right decision and accepted it with remarkable generosity.

At that time, no one at PRS Guitars had any idea that the DGT (David Grissom Trem) signature model would eventually become part of the company's lineup. Because of that, dedicating the guitar to Ted McCarty felt especially meaningful.

The model was named in honor of Ted McCarty, the legendary executive whose work at Gibson helped shape the modern electric guitar industry. His contributions to guitar design and manufacturing left a lasting impact on countless musicians and builders around the world.
