Jason Newsted: “I Knew I Was Going to Die Without Help”: Jason Newsted Opens Up About Why He Left Metallica
May 21, 2026, 9 a.m.
Former Metallica bassist Jason Newsted has shared one of the most personal and emotional explanations yet regarding his departure from the legendary metal band. According to the musician, addiction struggles played a major role in his decision to leave the group in 2001.

Appearing on Dean Delray’s YouTube channel, Newsted reflected on the difficult period that ultimately pushed him away from one of the biggest bands in heavy music history. The bassist admitted that his physical and emotional condition had deteriorated to the point where he feared for his life.
From Cliff Burton’s Successor to a Core Part of Metallica’s Biggest Era
After the tragic death of Cliff Burton in 1986, Jason Newsted stepped into one of the most difficult roles in metal history by becoming the new bassist for Metallica. At the time, replacing Burton seemed nearly impossible in the eyes of many fans.
Nevertheless, Newsted eventually became a major part of the band’s identity during its commercially dominant years throughout the late 1980s and 1990s. His bass work appeared on several iconic releases that helped transform Metallica into a global phenomenon.
Behind the scenes, however, Newsted says his personal struggles were becoming increasingly severe.

“If I Didn’t Get Help, I Was Going to Die”
During the interview, Newsted spoke candidly about the reality of his situation:
“The reason I left Metallica is because I was a horrible addict. I was completely battling myself, and if I didn’t get some kind of help, I was going to die. So I told the guys, ‘Can I have a minute? Please just give me a minute.’ And they said, ‘No.’”
The statement stands as one of the most revealing comments Newsted has ever made about his exit from the band.
There are certain parallels between his story and the recent comments from former Korn bassist Fieldy, who has also discussed addiction issues and stepping away from his band.
Following Newsted’s departure, producer Bob Rock temporarily handled bass duties during the controversial St. Anger sessions before Robert Trujillo officially joined Metallica, a position he still holds today.
“I’d Rather Stay Alive Than Stay in the Band”
According to Newsted, the group’s refusal to give him time away ultimately forced him to make a life-changing decision.
“I told them, ‘I would rather stay alive than stay in your band.’ Even though I absolutely loved being in Metallica. I think that was obvious.”
The bassist then passionately defended his commitment to the band:
“Every night I wore the Metallica shirt. Every night I met fans who wanted to meet us and represented the band. Don’t tell me I wasn’t committed. Don’t tell me I wasn’t loyal. I was always the first one there and the last one to leave. That’s not talk — that’s history.”
Returning to the subject of his request for time away, he added:
“If you can’t give me a minute to get my head straight again, then I have to leave. That doesn’t mean I didn’t love you guys, and it definitely doesn’t mean I wasn’t committed to this band.”
Tensions Inside Metallica and the Echobrain Controversy
Back in 2001, James Hetfield publicly suggested that Newsted’s departure was tied to his side project, Echobrain. At the time, it was reported that the bassist wanted to focus on the project during the break he had proposed for Metallica.
Years later, however, Hetfield softened those statements and admitted he had been unfairly pressuring his “brother,” describing his behavior as emotionally suffocating.
Still, it’s clear that tensions inside the band were very real during that period. Newsted’s latest comments also show that he accepts part of the responsibility himself.
Ozzy Osbourne, Respect, and Life After Metallica
Interestingly, legendary rocker Ozzy Osbourne worked with both Jason Newsted and Robert Trujillo at different stages of his career. Ozzy once remarked that Newsted had a certain “edge” that stood out to him.
After leaving Metallica, Newsted briefly toured with Ozzy Osbourne — ironically replacing Robert Trujillo in the process.
Newsted later suggested that Ozzy’s band environment carried a greater level of mutual respect than what he experienced during his final years with Metallica.
EMG Celebrates 50 Years with Metallica Signature Pickups
At the same time, pickup manufacturer EMG is celebrating its 50th anniversary by releasing special edition pickups inspired by the members of Metallica.
The new anniversary products are designed around the signature tones associated with the band’s legendary players and are already generating major interest among guitarists and metal fans worldwide.
The story of Jason Newsted is more than just another chapter in the history of a famous metal band. It’s a reminder of the emotional and personal toll that years of touring, pressure, and life at the highest level of the music industry can create.
