Legendary guitar virtuoso Steve Vai has officially listed his Los Angeles property for sale — and it includes his world-famous home studio, the Harmony Hut.

According to Robb Report, Steve Vai originally purchased the Encino estate around 30 years ago for approximately $1.2 million. At the time, the property featured a neglected structure at the back of the yard — a small shack that once served as living quarters for a gardener. Despite its unusual and somewhat eerie history, this very space would later become a dream environment for any guitarist.

Vai previously shared the origin story of the Harmony Hut in a blog post on his official website, detailing how he transformed the building while touring in support of his Ultra Zone album.

He explained that the main house had stood empty for about a decade before he acquired it. However, the expansive two-acre land made the investment worthwhile. During that period, a gardener had lived in the small backyard structure. Tragically, the man passed away there, and his body went undiscovered for two weeks until neighbors noticed an unusual odor. Reflecting on this, Vai humorously remarked that it was, ironically, “a perfect place to create beautiful music.”

Despite the unsettling backstory, Steve Vai completely reinvented the space, turning it into a bright, welcoming, and highly functional studio.

He expanded the building by adding an extra room, extending the front, and installing a large window. This allowed him to enjoy views of the backyard, his family, and natural sunlight while working. The interior design featured soft fabrics lining the walls and warm lighting from Tiffany-style lamps, creating an inspiring and comfortable creative atmosphere.

Over time, the Harmony Hut evolved into a true sanctuary for Vai. He used the studio extensively for writing, recording, and even filming live performances. Notably, projects such as The Story of Light and Modern Primitive were developed within this very space.

The studio also housed his extensive guitar collection, with numerous instruments displayed across the walls.

In a studio tour video published on YouTube last October, Vai showcased part of his collection, including guitars gifted to him by iconic players such as Yngwie Malmsteen, Joe Satriani, Mick Mars, and Frank Zappa.

Among the highlights were his very first electric guitar, his Ibanez model from his time with Whitesnake, and the famous triple-neck Heart guitar — an instrument that even sparked a playful “arms race” with guitarist Michael Angelo Batio.

However, there is one important detail for potential buyers: the guitar collection is not included in the sale. This means the walls — though equipped with mounts — will be left empty, ready for the next owner to fill with their own prized instruments.
