Hughes & Kettner Replex Delay Guitar Pedal — vintage tape echo recreated with modern technology

Description and concept
The Hughes & Kettner Replex is a delay pedal that combines digital signal processing with analog tube circuitry to recreate the sound of classic tape echo units—without the need for tape replacement or maintenance.

Designed for players seeking authentic vintage tone with modern reliability, the pedal offers three main effect types:

  • Reverb
  • Single-tap delay
  • Dual-tap delay

Only one effect can be active at a time, staying true to the simplicity of classic echo machines.

Construction and control
The unit is built in a robust metal housing and features traditional recessed rotary controls. It includes four footswitches:

  • one for bypass
  • three for selecting effect modes

The pedal operates in mono, with a high-impedance input suitable for electric guitar.

Sound shaping and control
The Replex provides detailed control over the signal:

  • Output Level — overall signal level
  • Reverb Volume — reverb level
  • Delay Volume — delay level
  • Second Head Volume — level of the second repeat

Delay parameters include:

  • Single Head Time — delay time for single-tap mode
  • Dual Head Time — delay time for dual-tap mode

The maximum delay time is approximately 0.75 seconds, suitable for most musical applications. The number of repeats is controlled via the Delay Feedback knob.

The Drive control adds tube overdrive at the input stage for added warmth and grit.

Vintage character and tone
The Vintage control shapes the feedback signal, introducing:

  • subtle modulation
  • harmonic distortion
  • high-frequency roll-off

This recreates the imperfections of tape echo systems, where each repeat becomes progressively darker and more degraded—perfect for achieving classic 1960s guitar tones.

The reverb effect closely resembles a traditional spring reverb found in guitar amplifiers, without mechanical noise.

Features and limitations
The Replex remains relatively simple, much like the vintage units it emulates. However:

  • delay and reverb cannot be used simultaneously
  • no tap tempo function
  • small knobs can make precise adjustments difficult

Despite these limitations, the overall sound quality is strong and convincingly vintage.

Conclusion
The Hughes & Kettner Replex is a focused and characterful pedal for players who want authentic tape echo tones. It may not be feature-heavy, but it excels at delivering warm, organic, vintage-inspired effects with modern reliability.
