The Ultimate Boutique Benchmark: In-Depth Exploration of the Bogner Ecstasy 101B Tube Head
The legacy of this iconic flagship amplifier dates back to 1992 with the launch of the original 100B. During an era when players relied on complex rack preamps or multiple amplifiers to achieve tonal variety, founder Reinhold Bogner recognized two crucial flaws: split rack setups lacked the organic touch response of a unified circuit, and the industry desperately needed an all-in-one amplifier with vintage 1960s soul. The resulting 3-channel Ecstasy virtually defined the modern "boutique amplifier" category.
Tone purist Eric Johnson was so impressed upon trying the amplifier that he immediately purchased one and took it on a joint tour with B.B. King. The Ecstasy quickly became a staple for world-class artists, including Steve Vai, George Lynch, Brad Whitford of Aerosmith, Walter Becker of Steely Dan, Buddy Guy, Steve Farris of Mr. Mister, Mark Goldenberg with Jackson Browne, and Christopher Cross. It also became the secret weapon for top-tier producers like Dave Jerden (The Rolling Stones, Alice in Chains), Michael Beinhorn (Korn, Red Hot Chili Peppers), Sylvia Massy (Tool), and Mike Clink (Guns N' Roses, UFO).
Introduced in 1995, the Ecstasy 101B introduced revolutionary features previously unseen in guitar amplification: an assignable speaker output switching system, a power attenuator loop, and dual Presence controls with power amp damping adjustments. The clean channel gained an extra gain stage and Boost function to capture raw 1950s combo grit, while Channels 2 and 3 received the iconic Plexi mode and a Structure switch to toggle between high-gain and low-gain voicings. The FX loop was updated to operate in series or parallel, alongside selectable Class A / Class AB operation modes.
