1974 Gibson SG Standard Walnut
Vintage Tone and Iconic SG Design
Produced by Gibson during the Kalamazoo era, the 1974 SG Standard represents the distinctive character of Gibson’s 1970s instruments. Built with a solid mahogany body and neck, powerful humbuckers, and the unmistakable SG silhouette, this model delivers the aggressive attack, sustain, and resonance that made the SG a rock icon.
Finished in Walnut, a translucent brown lacquer popular in the early-to-mid 1970s, the guitar reveals the natural grain of the mahogany body while offering a darker, more understated look compared to the classic Cherry finish.
The lightweight mahogany construction provides excellent resonance and fast response, while the slim neck profile ensures comfortable playability across the entire fretboard. Combined with Gibson’s powerful “Tar-Back” humbuckers, the SG Standard produces a bold, articulate tone with strong midrange presence and impressive clarity under gain.
Whether used for classic rock, blues, or modern high-gain tones, the 1974 SG Standard remains one of the most recognizable and versatile vintage electric guitars.
Key Features
Mahogany Body Construction
The SG’s solid mahogany body provides a warm tonal foundation with strong midrange and excellent sustain. The lightweight construction also makes the guitar extremely comfortable for long performances.
1970s Gibson “Tar-Back” Humbuckers
These epoxy-potted humbuckers were designed to reduce microphonic feedback and deliver a powerful, articulate tone with excellent clarity and punch.
Harmonica Bridge
The large Schaller-style “Harmonica” Tune-O-Matic bridge, widely used by Gibson in the 1970s, provides increased adjustment range and stable intonation.
Classic SG Electronics
The traditional Gibson control layout offers wide tonal flexibility with independent volume and tone controls for each pickup.
