"Modern Pop Music Has Hit Rock Bottom": Kirk Hammett of Metallica Shares His Honest Thoughts on Today's Songwriting

Legendary Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett has openly shared his concerns about the current state of the music industry, offering strong criticism of modern pop music and today's approach to songwriting. Speaking with The Irish Times, the guitarist discussed how technology has transformed the creative process and explained why he believes something important has been lost along the way.

The interview took place in Dublin during Metallica's ongoing 72 Seasons world tour, where the band performed two major concerts. Reflecting on the impact of modern technology, Kirk Hammett admitted that he misses an era when musicians had to work tirelessly to develop their skills and earn their place through dedication and persistence.

According to the guitarist, overcoming challenges has always been an essential part of becoming a truly original artist.

"I sometimes miss the days when people really had to work hard to learn their craft. That's where the real value lies. It's determination and inspiration that push you to create something uniquely your own and eventually develop your own sound and musical identity," Kirk Hammett explained.

 

The Metallica guitarist believes tht the rapid advancement of digital technology over the past two decades has made musical performances increasingly polished and technically flawless. At the same time, he acknowledged that today's younger guitarists possess remarkable technical skills thanks to the enormous amount of educational material and information now available online.

However, Kirk Hammett also believes there is a downside to that progress. While technical ability has reached an impressive level, he feels that truly memorable songs have become much harder to find.

Despite his criticism, the guitarist remains hopeful that the next generation of musicians will use their knowledge and talent to elevate the quality of modern music.

"I hope all of this leads to better pop music, better mainstream music, and above all, stronger songwriting. Right now, I honestly feel that both songwriting and pop music are in a very poor place. I hope all these incredibly talented musicians, who can now teach themselves through the internet, will step forward and channel everything they've learned, along with their inspiration, into creating new songs, new ideas, and a brighter future for music at a much higher level than where it stands today. I'll say it again—I think today's pop music is in a very weak state. My apologies to everyone who loves pop music," Kirk Hammett said.

In Kirk Hammett's view, the future of music depends not only on technical excellence but also on developing a unique artistic voice. He believes that originality, forged through perseverance and hard work, has the power to move the industry away from formulaic and repetitive songwriting toward music with greater personality, creativity, and emotional impact.
